Story 6: The Question That Made Pip Think

Discovery Lab — critical thinking morning

1. Story — Text-Based (Day 1-2: Imagination Studio)

Read story with NO pictures first. In this story you will find 8 NEW AI-related terms: Question, Reason, Assume, Doubt, Curiosity, Investigate, Explore, Wonder. Already taught terms may appear for revision.

Lina and Umar are in the discovery lab.

The lab has a helper robot named Pip with a sensor that hears why. A sensor is an ear that feels sound.

Pip saves questions as data and many questions make a dataset basket. A dataset is like a basket of notes.

Pip finds a pattern that says plants need sun. A pattern is when same idea happens again and again.

Umar says plants need sun because they are green.

Lina asks a question. Question is when you ask why or how.

She says why do plants need sun? What is the reason? Reason is why something happens.

Pip says plants need sun because they like yellow.

Lina says we should not assume. Assume is when you think something is true without checking.

Umar says we can doubt. Doubt is when you are not sure and you want to check more.

Pip needs curiosity. Curiosity is wanting to know more and asking why.

Lina says let us investigate. Investigate is when you look closely and test to find out.

Umar says let us explore. Explore is when you try new ways and see what happens.

Pip feels wonder. Wonder is when you feel amazed and want to learn.

The scientist shows how sun helps plants make food. That is the reason with evidence.

Lina teaches Pip to ask a question before answering and to not assume but to investigate and explore.

Pip learns to say I have curiosity and wonder and I will check, and to keep doubt as a friend.

Umar claps because Pip now asks why and shows reason with care.

The discovery lab stays curious and kind and Pip learns to think with questions.

2. Instruction — Before Images (Separated from Story Text)

How to use Day 3-5 (Instruction separated from story text):
Day 3-4: Show Image 1 ANCHOR (vol3-imag361) — Realistic discovery lab — what child imagined. Ask: Where is sensor? Where is dataset basket? Where is pattern? What is question? What is reason? What is assume? What is doubt? Where is curiosity? How to investigate? How to explore? Where is wonder? — Location: Discovery Lab — Segment: Scientists.

Day 5: Show Image 2 CREATOR (vol3-imag362) — DIFFERENT STYLE playful art studio — not same realistic lab — to keep children interested. Child becomes author.
