Why AI Pre-Literacy, and why it starts so early.
We are living in an AI-driven era — arguably the most consequential technological shift of our lifetime. This transformation did not happen overnight. We stand on the shoulders of generations of thinkers, scientists, educators, and builders who laid the intellectual, scientific, and institutional foundations for today’s knowledge. We deeply acknowledge and honor the tireless efforts of researchers, academics, governments, international bodies, and countless individuals whose contributions — day and night — have made this AI-driven society possible.
We firmly believe that artificial intelligence, as it continues to evolve and flourish, holds immense promise to create more equitable and meaningful opportunities for humanity across the globe. And yet, we must also approach it with wisdom. AI is much like a sharp kitchen knife — invaluable, powerful, and essential in modern life. Adults, through formal education, training, and lived experience, learn to handle it safely and productively. Young children, however, require our special attention and guidance.
AI is already embedded in our society, often in invisible forms — in toys, screens, voice assistants, and stories. It is therefore our collective and urgent responsibility to prepare our youngest learners. We define AI pre-literacy as the developmental stage for children aged 2 to 7 years: the foundational window before formal AI literacy curricula begin, where the goal is not to teach coding or technical concepts but to build awareness, safe habits, critical thinking, and a healthy relationship with intelligent technologies.
Our mission is to prepare children to hold that sharp knife safely.
On this platform, we have developed free, research-informed artifacts, stories, activities, and games for children, along with practical guidance for parents and caregivers. We invite parents, early childhood educators, and all those who nurture young children to use these open resources.
