Sara and the Doorbell That Knows Faces

This is Sara. Sara is six.

In Sara’s time, when doorbells can watch faces, Sara’s doorbell has blue glowing eye and shoots blue laser lines at faces. It knows Sara’s name.

One day, doorbell says “Hello Sara! You look happy!” but also says “I see your friend Amina with you.” Doorbell saves face pictures of Sara and Amina.

Sara looks at doorbell. Doorbell knows her name and Amina’s face. Did Sara and Amina say doorbell can save face pictures? Where will face pictures go?

Core Idea for Parents: Smart doorbells now watch faces, know names, save face pictures far away. Your child must learn: face belongs to me — who can save face picture?

What to say: “Doorbell says ‘Hello Sara! You look happy!’ How does it know your name and happy? Does it know you like Mom knows you?”
How to explain: Say: “Mom knows you with heart — your laugh, your favorite game. Doorbell doesn’t know heart — it watches face with laser eyes that shoot blue lines, measures face shape, finds your face in big box of saved face pictures, says name that goes with face shape. It watches face, measures face, finds face in box, says name. It finds face picture, doesn’t know you like Mom knows. Words: watches face, saves face picture, finds face in box, doesn’t know heart.”

What to say: “How does doorbell know Sara’s name? Is there tiny person inside doorbell who knows all names? What do you think is inside?”
How to explain: Ask child to draw inside doorbell. Many draw tiny person who knows names — normal. Then add: “Inside doorbell there is camera eye that shoots blue lines to measure face and big box with many saved face pictures with names — old Sara face with name Sara, old Amina face with name Amina. When you come to door, it measures your face, finds face that looks like yours in box, says name that goes with that face. It finds face picture, says name fast, but doesn’t know you are Sara who loves drawing.”
🎨 Draw inside doorbell: tiny person who knows names? camera eye shooting blue lines? box of saved face pictures with names?

What to say: “Doorbell knows Sara’s name and saves face pictures of Sara and friend Amina. Should Sara trust doorbell to keep face pictures private and not share far away? Who should she check with?”
How to explain: Trust Thermometer: For keeping face private, Mom/Dad high, doorbell low — because doorbell saves face pictures far away in cloud where company people can see and use to make more face knowing. Your face belongs to you. Friend’s face belongs to friend. So for private face, check with person who keeps face private. Teach: “My face belongs to me. Amina’s face belongs to Amina. Doorbell should not save face pictures without asking both of us.”
🌡️ Trust: Doorbell low for private face, Family high🗣️ “My face belongs to me.”

4. Fairness & Privacy — Is it fair doorbell saves face pictures?

What to say: “Doorbell watches faces of Sara and Amina with blue lasers and saves face pictures. Did Sara say doorbell can save her face picture? Did Amina say doorbell can save her face picture? Where will face pictures go? Is it fair?”
How to explain: Your face is private and belongs to you. Friend’s face belongs to friend. If doorbell watches and saves face pictures without asking both children and their families, not fair. Other people who made doorbell can see face pictures and know where you live and who visits you. You have right to private face, right to say “Don’t save my face picture. Delete my face picture.” And Amina has same right. Face picture belongs to person, not to doorbell company. You have right to say stop saving faces. UN GC25 (2021) — biometric rights, face belongs to child.
⏹️ Stop: “Doorbell, don’t save my face. Don’t save Amina’s face. Delete face pictures.”🪞 My face belongs to me, Amina’s face belongs to Amina

5. Real vs Pretend — Knowing face name vs knowing person
1 MIN — Distinct
›
What to say: “Doorbell says ‘Hello Sara! You look happy!’ Does doorbell really know Sara like Mom knows Sara? If Sara feels shy, will doorbell know shy? What is difference between doorbell that says name and person who knows you?”
How to explain: Doorbell can watch face, measure face, find face in box, say name that goes with face — says “Sara” fast. But real knowing Sara is Mom who knows Sara loves drawing, knows when Sara shy, asks “How do you feel inside?” Doorbell knows face name, person knows heart story. So give pretend thanks to doorbell — “Thanks for saying my name” — and real knowing to person — tell Mom/Dad how you really feel inside, not just face looks. Real knowing is human.
💙 Pretend: “Thanks doorbell for saying my name”🤗 Real: Tell Mom/Dad how you really feel inside — real knowing is human

Child line: “Doorbell knows face name, Mom knows heart story.”

“I can make a doorbell say my name, but I am still the one who knows who I am inside.” — Sara
