AI Pre-Literacy Story 8: Leo, Pip and the Ducks at the Lake

Outside: Park with ducks & lake · 8 words one per day · AI Pre-Literacy

Conceived, Designed & Developed by Prof. Dr. M. A. Pasha & Prof. Dr. S. Pasha

1. Story — Text-Based (Day 1-2: Imagination Studio)

Read this with NO pictures first. Child becomes illustrator.

Leo and Pip went to the lake in the park. It was early morning. Quiet. Just the soft sound of water and wind.

“Look,” whispered Leo. “Ducks.”

Five ducks swam in a line. One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

Quack! Quack!

Pip rolled to the edge of the lake. Pip’s Camera turned on. Click. “I see them,” said Pip. “Five brown ducks, all in a row.”

Leo sat down on the grass. “How do you know they’re ducks?” he asked. “Not geese?”

“That’s a good question,” said Pip. “That’s where Recognition comes in. Recognition is how I know what something is. Ducks are small. Geese are big. Ducks have short necks. Geese have long necks.”

“So they’re ducks,” said Leo.

“Let me check one more thing,” said Pip.

Quack! Quack!

Pip’s Sound Recognition turned on. “That’s a quack,” said Pip. “Not a honk. Geese honk. Ducks quack. Now I’m sure — they’re ducks.”

Leo laughed. “You’re very careful.”

“That’s how I know,” said Pip. “Careful is how I know.”

Pip looked across the whole lake. “Now let me see all of it.”

Pip’s Machine Vision turned on. “Machine Vision helps me see the whole picture at once — the way you see,” said Pip. “Not just one thing at a time.”

“What do you see?” asked Leo.

Pip’s Object Detection turned on. “Object Detection finds every thing in the picture. Let me find all the ducks.” Pip paused. “I count five… wait. Six.”

“Six?” said Leo. “I only see five.”

“There,” said Pip. “Behind the tall grass. A little duck is hiding.”

Leo leaned forward. A small brown head peeked out from the reeds. Two little eyes. Then — the little duck swam out. Zoom! It darted across the water, faster than all the others.

Pip’s Tracking turned on. “Tracking means following something as it moves,” said Pip. “I’ll follow the little one.”

The little duck swam towards the middle of the lake. And there — a cluster of lily pads. Round green leaves, floating on the water, sunlight on top.

“Where will it go?” asked Leo.

Pip was quiet for a moment. Then — “My Prediction says the little duck is going to the lily pads,” said Pip. “Prediction is a guess about what happens next.”

They watched. The little duck swam. And swam. And — reached the lily pads. It hopped up on one. Sat. Rested in the sun.

“You were right!” said Leo.

“Predictions can be right or wrong,” said Pip. “This one was right.”

The other five ducks came to join the little one. Six ducks, resting together in the sun. Everything quiet again.

Pip’s Scene Understanding turned on. “Scene Understanding puts everything together,” said Pip softly. “The lake. The ducks. The lily pads. The sun. The quiet.”

“And what does it say?” asked Leo.

Pip was quiet for a moment. Then — “It says this is a good place to be.”

Leo smiled. They sat together and watched the ducks. The sun rose higher. The lake sparkled.

“Let’s come back tomorrow,” said Leo.

“Let’s,” said Pip.

Even smart helpers love a quiet morning at the lake — and a good friend.

2. Image 1 — Association Anchor (Day 3-4)

Top of Image 1 — This is what you just read, now you can see it.

Park lake with five ducks swimming in a line, Leo and Pip at the water's edge, Camera eye open, ripples, lily pads, reeds, sunny morning

3. What is the purpose of this Image 1?

Purpose: To ANCHOR what child imagined in Days 1-2 to a direct picture.

Direct resemblance to Story 8 text — OUTSIDE. Shows a park lake on a sunny morning. Five brown ducks swim in a line — one, two, three, four, five. Ripples fan out behind them. Lily pads float in the middle of the lake, and reeds grow along the edge. Leo sits on the grass at the water’s edge, watching. Small blue robot Pip sits beside him, its Camera eye open, tracking the ducks. Warm sunlight, green trees on the far bank, quiet atmosphere.

Use Day 3-4: Point and name Day 3-4: Where is the Camera seeing the ducks? Can you count all five? Where is the little duck hiding behind the reeds? Where are the lily pads the little duck swims to? Where is Pip’s eye tracking? Child confirms imagination.

6. Image 2 — Creator Prompt (Day 5: Imagination Studio)

This image is NOT in story text — open for YOUR new story.

Leo with binoculars looking at the sky above the lake, birds flying — eagle, sparrows, ducks — Pip beside him, both looking up
Purpose: To CREATE a new story — child becomes author.

Leo holds binoculars and looks up at the sky above the lake. Different birds fly overhead — an eagle circling high, sparrows darting in a group, a small family of ducks in formation. Pip sits beside Leo on the grass, also looking up, its Camera eye tracking the sky. The lake and lily pads are in the background.

Use Day 5: This second image does NOT happen in the duck-line story — it is a new bird-watching idea. Shows Leo with binoculars looking up at the sky with different birds — an eagle, sparrows, ducks flying. Day 5 Creator: After watching the ducks on the water, look up! What birds are in the sky? How many? Where are they going? What will Pip’s Scene Understanding say about the sky?
